A military device for chemical reconnaissance (VPHR) is a device designed to determine airborne, on-site, and chemical weapons agents — sarin, soman, mustard, phosgene, diphosgene, hydrocyanic acid, cyan chloride, and V-gas vapors in the air.

The principle of operation of the VPHR is as follows: when pumping through the indicator tubes of the analyzed air, in case of the presence of toxic substances, there is a change in the color of the tube filler, which approximately determine the concentration of toxic substances.

The VPHR device consists of a body and a pump, paper cassettes with indicator tubes, smoke filters, nozzles to the pump, protective caps, heaters and cartridges for it, a flashlight placed in it. In addition, the instrument kit includes a blade, instruction manual for the definition of sarin, soman, VX-gases and instructions for use of the instrument. For carrying the device VPHR has a shoulder strap with tape.

Instruments of chemical reconnaissance VPHR have indicator tubes designed to determine the toxic substances and are sealed glass tubes, inside which are placed the filler and glass ampoules with reagents. On the upper part of the indicator tube, a conditional marking is applied, indicating to detect which agent it is intended to:

• IT-44: Red ring and red dot:  For determination of:
organophosphorus agents (SIP) – sarin, soman, V-gases. (besides detection of poison gas) definition of excess of maximum permissible concentration (maximum concentration limit) of chlorine, cyanogen chloride ,fluoric hydrogen, phosgene and diphosgene.

• IT-45: Three green rings:  For determination of:
phosgene, diphosgene, hydrocyanic acid, cyanic hydrogen, cyanogen chloride, oxides of nitrogen, trichlrotriethylamine , etc.

• IT-36: One yellow ring:  For determination of:
mustard gas, arsenic hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide, oxides of nitrogen, phosgene etc.

Ten indicator tubes (IT) VPHR with the same marking are placed in a paper cassette. On the front side of the cassette there is a colorimetric color standard, brief instructions on how to work with the indicator tube, the date of manufacture and the warranty period.

Chemical reconnaissance devices have a hand piston pump used to pump test air through a tube indicator. At 50 pump swings per minute, 1.8 – 2 liters of air pass through the indicator tube.
The pump, which has an VPHR device, consists of a head, cylinder, rod, rod handle. It is placed in a metal tube, mounted in the housing of the device. Inside the pipe there is a spring designed to push the pump when opening the latch. The VPHR pump is inserted into the pipe with the handle of the rod out. In the pump head there is a knife for cutting the ends of the indicator tubes and a socket for mounting the indicator tube. At the end of the head there are two blind holes for breaking the ends of the tubes. In addition, a rubber valve and a valve seat are located in the head. To ensure the tightness of the head connection to the valve device, rubber gaskets are provided. A guide ring with 4 openings was pressed into the cylinder of the VPHR pump to exit when the pump re-entered. On the pump rod, placed in the VPHR devices, wear a rubber cuff, fastened with a sleeve.
